A MUSIC student is hitting the high notes with his final graduation piece – an hour-long opera to be performed at the Edinburgh Fringe.
Joshua Goodman, 21, has just completed his final year at Huddersfield University, but will take his piece The Man and Men north for a gruelling 23 performances from August 5 to 31.
Described as an abstract piece exploring male masculinity but through a female singer, Josh says it is the culmination of his study of composition and teenage work in musical theatre.
There is no narrative in the play, but lead Ema Walton, soon to continue her studies with a masters in opera performance at Huddersfield, will represent “man” while five instruments will recreate “men”.
The contrast between the subject matter and Ema’s voice will be stark as she is a coloratura soprano, one of the higher voices typified by trills and florid phrases.
Josh, who comes from Nottingham and outside of his studies plays jazz, is now getting down to the hard work of preparing the piece for performance.
You can join The Man and Mengroup on Facebook and hear more about an upcoming performance date in West Yorkshire prior to the festival dates.
