Ruddi’s Retreat, based in Linthwaite, is celebrating after receiving a £300 donation from the GALAXY Hot Chocolate Fund.

Ruddi’s Retreat was set up in 2011 and is named after cancer survivor Ruddi Waterworth-Jones. His mum, Ali Waterworth decided to start the charity to help other families of seriously ill children after her and her own family benefitted from a trip away given to them by the charity Candle Lighters. It now helps around 60 families a year by treating them to holidays at one of its two caravans situated in North Yorkshire.

The charity is currently fundraising to buy a lodge that sleeps 10 people. The lodge will be fitted with specific medical equipment so they can reach out to children with more complex needs.

Ali Waterworth, founder, says: “This donation from the GALAXY Hot Chocolate Fund means that we can send a family on holiday and put the remainder of the money towards the lodge.

“It costs £200 to send a family on holiday and we are constantly fundraising for this. Last year, we opened a tea room and sweet shop on Manchester Road, Huddersfield, with the money raised at the shop helping to support the charity.”

GALAXY Hot Chocolate is looking to help small, local community projects, groups and charities across the UK and Ireland by donating cash awards to support warm-hearted people and projects.

Michelle Frost, spokeswoman for GALAXY Hot Chocolate said: “From our research, we know that across the UK and Ireland smaller charities and community groups are struggling to make ends meet despite the efforts of a huge number of warm-hearted volunteers. Seventy per cent of charities and organisations report that 51-100% of funds come from fundraising, with a further 68% stating that finding funds has become ten times harder over the past five years*.

“The GALAXY Hot Chocolate Fund aims to give them a helping hand and hopefully inspire more people to get involved.”

Open for entries until February 26 2017, the Fund will distribute five £300 awards to deserving recipients every week. Applications to the Fund can be made on the GALAXY Hot Chocolate website

This year, the Fund will also cast a spotlight on the unsung heroes working in the charity sector, through the ‘Outstanding Volunteer Award’. Every week that the Fund runs, a volunteer will be chosen by national volunteer organisation NCVO to receive a GALAXY Hot Chocolate Hero Hamper! So once you have registered your organisation for an award, why not nominate a volunteer who always goes the extra mile too?

GALAXY hot chocolate offers the smooth creamy taste of GALAXY chocolate in a heart-warming drink.
